Magic Bus Myanmar, an international NGO, launched a US$400,000 programme supported by Dulwich International Schools Foundation (DISF) to help up to 2,500 underprivileged children in Thanlyin and Hlaing Thayar Townships in Yangon to break the cycle of poverty.
The donation provides support to Magic Bus Myanmar for two years and will allow the organisation to establish its Education to Livelihoods programme in Myanmar, according to a press release on March 18.
The DISF is a newly created charitable initiative of Dulwich College International (DCI). DCI is the academic advisor to Pun Hlaing International School (PHIS) and British College Yangon (BCY).
Magic Bus uses activity based learning delivered by local youth who act as mentors for these young children and aims to embed education, life skills, gender and other social messages for children in Myanmar. This innovative approach equips children with the skills and opportunities to help them realise their potential and be ready for the world of work. Magic Bus Myanmar aims to replicate the success it has achieved in India where more than 400,000 disadvantaged children from some of India’s poorest rural villages and urban slum settlements have already been supported and mentored.
“It is a great honour that through the Dulwich International Schools Foundation we can support the launch of such a respected international NGO as Magic Bus Myanmar. This partnership underscores our commitment to giving back to local communities in the areas in which our schools operate,” said Mr. Daryl Orchard, DCI’s Headmaster in Myanmar.
“Magic Bus, is an NGO whose ethos closely matches that of the Dulwich International Schools Foundation, and has an excellent track record of helping children out of poverty with its community based approach.”
“We are thrilled with the generous support Dulwich International Schools Foundation is providing to bring Magic Bus to Myanmar,” said Mr. Pratik Kumar, Executive Director, Magic Bus Global.
“At Magic Bus our aim is to move children out of poverty by nurturing them on a journey from childhood to livelihood. We will tailor our unique approach which utilises an activity based curriculum and community mentors in line with the unique challenges faced by children in Myanmar.”
“We strongly believe that the Magic Bus methodology will be very relevant in the Myanmar context and provide a unique, cost effective and scalable method of tackling deep routed problems prevalent in the society.”
