China's President Xi Jinping arrived in Uzbekistan on Wednesday ahead of the 22nd meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), where a meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin is expected.

Xi was met at the airport by officials including Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The SCO was established in 2001 as a political, economic and security organisation to rival Western institutions.
