Woman dies in Pickled-tea-leaf factory fire in Dawei Town

A 78-year-old woman was killed in a fire at a pickled tea-leaf factory in Tanintharyi Region’s Dawei Town at 3:30 p.m. on 1 November, according to locals.

The factory was in a house owned by the victim, Daw Thein Thein on the Thama to Wayama Road in Ka-Nyone Ward, Dawei Town.

Daw Thein Thein was trapped inside the house by the fire and died. Three other women working there were also injured.

A Dawei District Fire Service Department official said, "The fire killed the elderly woman who owned the house. In addition, three female workers were injured, but not critically."

Due to an electrical power outage candles had been lit in the house. The fire started when gas leaked from a pipe that was supposed to be attached to a gas cylinder, but which had not been properly reconnected after the cylinder had been moved, according to the Dawei District Fire Service Department.

The Fire Service Department said that the fire caused one million kyats worth of damage. Dawei Myoma Police Station is investigating the incident and might still open a case related to
