Weapons discovered in Cambodia likely headed for Myanmar

Sar Kheng, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, has ordered authorities to search for the owners of the more than 30 automatic rifles found hidden in Battambang Province, the Khmer Times reported.

Lt. Gen. Chhay Kim Khoeun, spokesman for the National Police said that according to reports from residents, police found 33 rifles comprising 30 AK-47 assault rifles and three M79 firearms, and 40 magazines.

Lt. Gen. Khieu Sopheak said, “We are looking at several scenarios. Firstly, we believe that arms could be part of an arms smuggling racket to Myanmar since the country is now in turmoil; Secondly, the weapons could have been amassed for local insurrection but this is a very remote possibility and, lastly, the weapons could belong to armed robbers. Among the three possible scenarios, we believe the first scenario is most likely,” according to the Khmer Times article.
