The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) held a meeting with the Myanmar Military Council’s Ministry of Immigration and Population (MoIP) in Naypyidaw on 17 July.

The junta’s mouthpiece media reported that Noriko Takagi, Resident Representative of UNHCR, and Union Minister for MoIP Myint Kyaing discussed the signing of a new MoU for the return of Rohingya refugees to Rakhine State, visa extension for foreigners including UNHCR personnel, awareness of Myanmar’s efforts to repatriate displaced persons from Rakhine State and conditions for effective cooperation and assistance.

Myanmar and Bangladesh recently initiated repatriation programmes, but these displaced persons claimed that any attempt at repatriation will not address fundamental insecurities, if Myanmar does not amend its citizenship law.
