A UN spokesman has said no representative from Myanmar will address the UN General Assembly, currently in session, according to a report by Reuters.

Rival claims are being made by the Myanmar military junta that illegally grabbed power on 1 February and the currently-seated envoy who was representing the elected civilian government, Kyaw Moe Tun.

Myanmar's current UN Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun, appointed by Aung San Suu Kyi's elected government, had initially been penciled in to address the 193-member General Assembly on Monday, the final day of the gathering, the report said.

However, a backroom deal between China, Russia and United States suggests Moscow and Beijing will not object to Kyaw Moe Tun remaining in the Myanmar UN seat for the moment as long as he does not speak during the high-level meeting.

Kyaw Moe Tun confirmed to Reuters that he will not speak in the general debate.
