Mandalay Chanayethazan Township court public relation officer Kyaw Myo Win said that the trial court charged Rose Party or United Democratic Party (UDP) Chairman Kyaw Myint with escape from Mandalay Obo prison under section 224 of Penal Code on October 20.

He escaped from prison in January 1999 while he was being admitted at Mandalay General Hospital for treatment.

Section 224 of Penal Code stipulates that ‘whoever escapes or attempts to escape from any custody in which he is lawfully detained for any such offence, shall be punished with imprisonment which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both. The next hearing was fixed for October 23 for further hearings in this case.
