Two bombs explode near Yangon Ward Administratator’s Office

Two bombs exploded near the No. 20 Ward Administrator's Office on Anawrahta Road, in Hlaingthayar Township, Yangon City at around 6:00 p.m. on 30 July.

We don’t know the extent of the damage yet, the road is closed. The alley behind the office is also closed. The main road is open but cars passing on that road are being checked by junta soldiers”, said a Hlaingthayar resident.

Previously, on 1 January 2023, the No. 20 Ward Administrator who was also a member of the military-aligned Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), was shot dead whilst he was sitting in a teashop near the Ward Administrator’s Office, according to Hlaingthayar residents.

One of them said: “The former ward administrator was shot dead. There is now a new ward administrator who was appointed by the Military Council. Only individuals connected to the junta are permitted to ride motorcycles on that side of the street [next to the ward administration office]. Members of the military council frequently visit that office.”

Hlaingthayar Township is one of the areas in Myanmar that has been placed under martial law. Recently the junta has been conducting nighttime inspections of overnight guest list registrations to check that all non-residents staying overnight have been properly registered. The junta has also been arresting motorcycle riders and drivers of motorised trishaws
