Thai media is reporting that more than 5,000 Myanmar refugees have fled over the border into Thailand into Tak’s Mae Sot district as a result of heavy fighting between the Myanmar military and the ethnic Karen resistance.

Tak governor Somchai Kitcharoenrungroj said that as of Sunday, 5,358 villagers from Myanmar had crossed the Moei River to seek refuge on Thai soil, reports the Bangkok Post.

The Thai authorities had to recently warn the Myanmar military about artillery shells landing on the Thai side of the border. In one incident a few days ago, one refugee from Myanmar who had fled into Thailand was injured.

Thai security officials have extended humanitarian assistance to refugees sheltering in Mae Sot and Phop Phra districts, where those injured are being treated by medics, Tak governor Somchai told the Bangkok Post.
