The National Unity Government (NUG)

  • CRPH announced on Friday that Myanmar people were getting angry as there could be no advantage for the country out of the meeting between Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and the junta leader Min Aung Hlaing and that the military junta with terrorist acts must be isolated from society.
  • There was an announcement calling on Cambodian Prime Minister, 2022 ASEAN Chair who would meet with the military junta with violent activities and crimes against humanity for grasping power, to respect the desire and efforts for democracy by the Myanmar people.
  • Ministry of Education-NUG reported to the public on their activities from May to October 2021.

Revolution Activities

  • In Thayetchaung Township of Taninthayi Region, the junta army shot dead 4 people, including 3 children, shooting them in the head, in Kingshay village.
  • In Loikaw Township of Karenni State, there were battles in wards including Mailone. Reportedly, 3 people were shot dead and many local residents had to run away.
  • In Monywa Township of Sagaing Region, Basic Education Students’ Union led a protest against any forms of dictatorship in Myanmar on Friday, stepping over the photos of Hun Sen and Min Aung Hlaing, and burning them.
  • On Ayadaw-Wetlet border, a contingent of about 40 junta soldiers on foot was attacked with mines by local PDF near Thamayoe bridge. Wetlet PDF announced on Thursday that 4 junta soldiers, including an officer, had died.
  • In Kani, Pale, Butalin, Yinmabin, Ayadaw and Pinlebu townships of Sagaing Region, there was a telecommunication blackout. According to local residents, they could not send even SMS.
  • On Friday, a combined rally of Salingyi North and Yinmabin East marched for the downfall of the military dictatorship.
  • In Khin-U Township, the junta army shot dead an innocent child named Maung Chit Kaung aged 12.
  • In a village of Shwebo Township, there was a march against the military dictatorship on Friday morning with anti-junta slogans.
  • As a 334-day protest, Kalay people marched against Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, who had come to meet with the junta leader Min Aung Hlaing, on Friday, burning his photo.
  • In Kantbalu Township, the junta armed forces set fire to houses, barns and shops in Kangyi Ashay village. According to local residents, they also arrested over 20 people, including a 4-year old child, at 6:40 am Friday.
  • In Kayin State, a mortar shell was fired by the junta BGF (1013) and fell in Balepe village at 6:20 pm Thursday. According to local sources, U Saw Tun Tin aged 54 was hit in his stomach and died on the spot on his way back from the farm.
  • In Phakant of Kachin State, there was a march against the military dictatorship, burning photos of Hun Sen.
  • At about 11:55 am Friday, there were bomb explosions at the revenue office near Pansodan and Kanna roads in the Yangon downtown area.
  • According to local residents, there were bomb explosions in Mingala Taung Nyunt Township at about 11:20 am Friday.
  • At about 9:30 am Friday, two motorbikers threw a grenade at Myawaddy Bank, owned by the junta army, near Zaycho Clock Tower in Mandalay. Reportedly, 2 people, a man making a cash withdrawal and a staff member, were slightly injured.
  • At about 12:40 pm Friday, there was a hand-made mine attack on the traffic police office on 90 street between 30 and 31 streets in Mandalay. In addition, a bomb exploded on 36 street and 83-82 streets.
  • At about 7:00 am Friday, there was a bomb explosion in front of MIIT on 73 street and 107/109 streets. The same happened at the immigration office in Patheingyi Township.

Ethnic Armed Organizations

  • On the Thai-Myanmar border, the Karenni Army (KA) took control of the junta army camp near Nanpam stream in Shadaw Township of Karenni State on Friday morning. Reportedly, there were many casualties among junta soldiers and 4 others were caught alive. According to KA, a supporting military helicopter dropped bombs on their forces.
  • According to the KNU, there were 3152 battles between the junta armed forces and KNLA/KNDO in Kawthulay Area of Kayin State under the control of the KNU in 2021. Reportedly, 2190 junta soldiers died and 2048 others were injured. As for KNLA/KNDO, they lost 42 members and 130 others were injured.
  • Karenni National Defence Force (KNDF) Regiment (14) announced on Friday that Loikaw-Shadaw road would be closed from 7th to 13th January in Karenni State.
  • According to Taw Oo Karen News, 3 junta soldiers from the junta army Ka-La-Ya (604) were attacked with mines while they were fetching water in Thandaunggyi Township of Kayin State on Thursday and they died.
  • In Chin State, a large number of the junta armed forces invaded between Kihlun and Lonehlaw villages in the west of Matupi-Hakha road. Starting from 9:15 am Thursday, there were heavy battles with local CDFs. According to CDF Matupi, the junta army arrested 7 travellers and used them as human shields.
  • In Kachin State, Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) prohibited gold mining in the areas under their control and surrounding areas.

The Military Council

  • On Friday afternoon, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen met with the junta leader at the Diplomat Hall in the Military Council chair office.
  • The junta leader Min Aung Hlaing announced that 20000 MMK would be collected per mobile SIM card for commerce tax.
  • The junta leader also announced that 15% of income from internet service providers would be collected as commerce tax. Reportedly, it was the highest taxation on phone and internet use.
  • According to the junta newspaper, peace and stability were restored in Laykaykaw Area of Kayin State and security forces, in cooperation with responsible personnel, and they had carried out activities for the people who had run away to return home. Consequently, those who had run away to the neighbouring country were coming back to their native places.
  • The military junta announced that it was no longer necessary for amendments to the Penal Code to be published in English and it could be done in Myanmar.
  • According to Indian news, the junta leader’s 9-month old grandson with a congenital heart disease had to undergo an operation by two heart specialists from India.

Summary on 7 January

  • As a protest against the military coup, the whole general public avoid taxations as much as possible, including boycotts against military products. Consequently, the military junta get less income. To overcome that situation, they have been collecting taxes by force. They also announced that taxes would be collected from mobile phone use, an essential element of the public’s daily life. Such oppression may pose more hardships to the public. The military junta may assume that only then, the public would become their puppets.
  • In Karenni State, there were heavy battles. On Friday, Karenni forces managed to take control of the junta army camp. As for the military junta, they had to use air strikes in their attacks.
  • As for Kayin, Sagaing and Chin, they had constant battles against the junta armed forces. As some areas in Sagaing Region have been under the control of local PDFs, junta soldiers conduct extreme violence in those areas and ruthlessly kill civilians.
  • In Yangon and Mandalay, the revolution was in great momentum with bomb explosions all over the cities.
