The National Unity Government (NUG)

  • On Thursday, Acting President of the NUG, Union Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs met with Derek Chollet, Counsellor of the US Foreign Ministry, and they had a discussion for one hour.
  • According to the right to self-defence, the public have been taking part in a People’s Defensive War. The NUG announced that 77 members of the junta armed forces had died and 18 others had been injured on Thursday.
  • In a weekly meeting, Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration-NUG and CDM committees discussed matters such as fund-raising activities for CDM staff members, their strong determination in the revolution and operation of public staff, the lifeblood of establishing federal democracy.
  • Reportedly, it was said that the US government, in cooperation with their allies, has been trying to provide more effective assistance for Myanmar during almost a year of the military coup. As for the NUG, they requested the US government to provide help with Myanmar affairs more effectively.

Revolution Activities

  • Tom Andrews, who submit special reports to the UN Human Rights Council, said that a report would be presented so that members of the UN could take responsive action against the military junta before it was too late.
  • In Monywa, Amyint General Strike led a march against the military dictatorship on Friday.
  • In Yinmabin Township, a combined rally of villages protested against the military dictatorship on Friday.
  • In Shwebo Township, local people marched for the downfall of the military dictatorship on Friday.
  • As a 355-day protest, Kalay people expressed their objection to the military dictatorship on Friday.
  • In Indaw Township, a supporting convoy of 30 military trucks was attacked with mines three times by local PDF on Thursday.
  • In Loikaw of Karenni State, two people were found dead in Tudungantha village and their dead bodies were buried on Friday.
  • In Mandalay, a combined rally of Seinban, Mandalay General Hospital, Monks’ Union and Maha Aungmye led a march against the military dictatorship on Friday.
  • According to VOMDY, there was a bomb attack at KBZ Bank Branch No. (40) on Friday morning. Reportedly, the glass was broken and a person was injured in the explosion.
  • On Friday morning, a rally of Mandalay marched against the military dictatorship, calling on the public to take part in the Silent Strike.
  • In Thanlyin Township of Yangon Region, there was a bomb explosion at Denko petrol station in relation to the military junta. Reportedly, there were no casualties.
  • At about 2:00 pm Friday, a foreign submarine arrived at Thanlyin Navy base.
  • In 8 townships of Yangon Region, Octopus (Youth Organization for Social Welfare), distributed brochures calling for the public’s participation in the Silent Strike.
  • At about 5:20 am Friday, YGN Dark Shadow Guerrilla Force had to cancel their plan as three cars of the public passed while preparing for an attack targeting junta soldiers on patrol under the Hledan overpass in Kamayut Township with a powerful remote mine.
  • According to Yangon-based From Zero to Hero, there was a bomb attack at Bayintnaung investigation camp at about 5:20 am Friday. Reportedly, there were casualties among junta soldiers.
  • In Kawhmu, Tontay and Kunchangone townships, the military junta made announcements through loud speakers, threatening local people not to take part in the Silent Strike.
  • In memory of Ma Khine Zar Thwe, a CDM bank staff member who lost her life in the Spring Revolution 10 months ago, her family carried out a donation on Friday.
  • In Yebyu Township of Taninthayi Region, there were battles every day between the junta armed forces and a combined force of local PDFs from 19th to 23rd January. Reportedly, there were 4 confirmed deaths of junta soldiers and many others were injured.
  • In Longlone Township, the basic education students’ union protested against the military dictatorship on Friday morning, chanting anti-junta slogans.
  • In Nabule Area of Yebyu Township, Pyusawti members shot dead a man aged 40 watering plants in the garden at about 10:00 am Friday.
  • In Phakant of Kachin State, there was a protest against the military dictatorship on Friday. They also marched in support of the KIA, PDF and the NUG.
  • According to local PDFs, there were more cases in which PDFs and EAOs managed to catch junta soldiers alive.
  • In Kyankhine Township of Ayeyarwaddy Region, the junta armed forces and administration arrested 5 men, accusing them of holding weapons.

Ethnic Armed Organizations

  • In Taungoo District under the control of KNU Regiment (2), there was a fighting between NTDF and Nay Pyi Taw-based junta army at about 11:00 am Friday. Reportedly, no less than 10 junta soldiers died and many others were injured.
  • In Phapun District under control of KNU Regiment (5), Toe Hlaing, a soldier from the junta army Ka-La-Ya 73, ran away due to oppression of his senior officer and joined the KNU.
  • In Mupan and Monekoe districts-Special Area (1) in Shan State, there were battles between the junta armed forces and MNDAA. Reportedly, junta soldiers conducted an invasion, shooting mortars constantly.

The Military Council

  • In Loikaw Township, the junta army killed 6 Karenni youth on Thursday morning and put their dead bodies in a toilet hole.
  • At the time of political instability with revolution activities all over the country, the military junta conducted an online meeting for resuming production of teak and hardwood on Friday morning.
  • In Tachileik Township of Shan State, the military junta charged 5 people, including MP U Win Swum, with Section (50-h) under the anti-terrorism law. They also announced on Friday that a report was to be made upon seeing those people.
  • In Hlaing Thaya Township, the military junta conducted lawsuits against 160 people, including 2 company owners, under the gambling law.
  • In Hsinbaungwe Township of Magwe Region, the junta administration met with 130 shopkeepers and business owners at the town hall on Thursday evening and told them to open their businesses as usual on the Silent Strike day.
  • In Pyinmana Township, there were announcements not to carry out anti-junta movements such as conducting a Silent Strike, clapping, banging pots and pans, sounding car horns and closing shops in support of anti-government organizations. Reportedly, legal action would be taken against those who do so under existing laws and Nay Pyi Taw municipal law.
  • The junta leader Min Aung Hlaing told responsible personnel to systematically carry out judiciary and security activities for the stability of the country.
  • According to the propaganda newspaper, there was a meeting of the junta committee on security, stability and order. Present on the occasion were members of the military junta, including Min Aung Hlaing, Sagaing Chief Minister and the Kachin State Chief Minister.

Summary on 28 January

  • Despite various efforts for influencing Sagaing and Kachin with the revolution in great momentum and collapse of the junta administration, the military junta just faced a great loss. The junta leader himself met with chief ministers and seemed to put pressure on them. It was likely that he himself would supervise them.
  • Reportedly, members of the junta armed forces carried out various forms of oppression and killed civilians, including senior citizens, on a daily basis. Such activities must be recorded systematically as preparation for legal action against them as war criminals.
  • The military junta was afraid of the Silent Strike by the whole public. They also threatened people not to do so in markets and wards. With a sense of fear, they arrested those who wrote about participation on social media and sealed off their businesses.
