The Military Council

  • According to the military junta, the Directorate of Investment and Company Administration was not closed although the period of a public holiday was extended to 31st August.
  • According to the junta media, deputy major general Soe Htut, the junta Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, was in Mon State. He had been inspecting prisons there.
  • The military junta announced that an application could be made via mail for a certificate on passing the matriculation exam and a list of marks.
  • According to the junta media, so-called press people from the junta Media Council were being provided capacity-building training.
  • According to the junta media, journalist U Sithu Aung Myint and Daw Htet Htet Khine, freelance producer at BBC Media Action, were arrested and charged with distributing propaganda.
  • According to the junta media, some PDF members from Mandalay and Kayar were arrested.
  • The National Unity Government (NUG)
  • The NUG sent a statement to 74th Mon Revolution Day which fell on Sunday.
  • In the statement, the NUG said that together with Mon people and all other ethnic people, collective efforts were needed till the end of the military dictatorship for the emergence of the Federal Democratic Nation and Federal Army.
  • CRPH denounced the action which allowed the junta representative to attend ASEAN Parliament Conference as an observer and left their elected MPs behind.
  • On Saturday night, the Ministry of Planning, Finance and Investment- NUG announced that Aungbalay Lottery was abolished.
  • With the guidance of the Ministry of Education- NUG, the committee representing CDM staff of education in Namkam and Muse townships was established on Sunday.

Revolution Activities

  • In Salingyi Township of Sagaing Region, there was a night strike of banging pots and pans against the military dictatorship in two villages in the north of Latbadaung Taung area on Saturday.
  • In Khin-U Township, Ko Mg Aye and Ma Nwet Nwet, a couple who sold agricultural chemicals were shot dead by the junta armed forces at about 8:00 pm Saturday. According to residents, their money 14 lakhs was taken away.
  • In Tantsi Township, the youth, in cooperation with farmers, expressed their objection to the military dictatorship on Sunday.
  • On Sunday, a rally comprising various villages from Salingyi North and Yinmabin East marched against the military dictatorship.
  • On Saturday night, two soldiers of the junta army stationing in Khin-U police station ran away with their weapons.
  • In Tamu, the students and the public made a protest against the military dictatorship at dawn Sunday. They also expressed their support for the NUG.
  • In Ye-U Township, farmers expressed their desire on Sunday that only NUG was public’s government.
  • Amidst difficulties, a rally of Monywa General Strike expressed their support for the NUG on Sunday morning.
  • As their 196-day protest, a powerful rally of Kalay townspeople marched for the downfall of the military dictatorship on Sunday.
  • On Saturday night, Mandalay Monks’ Union recited Parittas for the public as usual and protested against the military dictatorship.
  • On Sunday, Mandalay Monks’ Union led an anti-junta movement, reciting Parittas.
  • Chanting anti-junta slogans, a rally of Mandalay variety forces marched against the military dictatorship on Sunday morning.
  • On Sunday, Myataung rally conducted a march against the military watchdog.
  • On Sunday, a rally led by Mandalay Monks’ Union protested against the military watchdog.
  • Amidst travel restrictions with the excuse of COVID-19 and tight security measures in Dawei, a rally of youth and students expressed their disapproval of the military dictatorship.
  • In Myothit Township of Magwe Region, U Tun Tun, junta-appointed administer of Badigone village, was shot at about 9:00 am Sunday.
  • In Taungdwingyi Township, 100-household leader U Zaw Latt, allegedly informer to the junta was shot dead on Saturday morning, according to Baitthanoe PDA.
  • In Magwe Township, the villagers carried out an anti-junta movement on Sunday.
  • In Kyauktan Township of Yangon Region, there was an explosion at Thilawa industrial zone at about 10:00 am Sunday. According to residents, no one was injured in the incident.
  • Amidst difficulties on Sunday morning, a rally of Yangon youth made a guerrilla protest- “Accept NUG, reject military coup” on Thaketa Shukhintha road.
  • In Hlaingthaya Township, some junta soldiers were shot at Bayint Naung bridge at about 8:00 am Sunday. In the incident, a soldier died on the spot and many others were injured. After that, the junta armed forces made inspections all across the city.
  • Yin Le Le Tun, a female sergeant, called on female soldiers in the junta army to see the truth and join the public.
  • In Mon State, Mawlamyein youth and students carried out an indoor strike against the military dictatorship on Sunday.
  • In Bago Region, Basic Education Students’ Union (Ba-Ka-Tha Central) expressed their desire against the military dictatorship on Sunday morning, hanging anti-junta slogans at the downtown area in Pyi.
  • In Chin State, there was heavy fighting between the junta armed forces and CDF near Mindat in recent days. In those battles, CDF members urged junta soldiers to give up arms and join the public.
  • On Saturday, there was a battle between CDF Tandalan and 200 junta soldiers between Hakha and Tandalan. Reportedly, no less than 5 junta soldiers died. As for the CDF, they had no injuries.

Ethnic Armed Organizations

  • Within 4 days of the battles between KNLA Regiment (5) and the junta army, 20 junta soldiers died and 3 others were injured, according to KNU on Saturday.
  • On Saturday, Myanmar Beer unofficially imported in Maijaran under KIA/KIO, was destroyed.
  • In Phakant Township, the whole force of the junta police (30) had moved away. On Saturday, KIA set their camp on fire.
  • On Saturday night, PKPF announced the detailed list of 94 political prisoners, who were unjustly arrested with various charges in Karenni State after the military coup.

Summary on 23rd August

  • The military junta said that media freedom was provided. In reality, journalists and reporters were still arrested unjustly with various charges. It was just a joke for the public that the junta media council had been providing a refresher course so that press people could write with ethics. As for the junta media, they broke media ethics every day with misinformation and propaganda for the military junta. The junta media council failed to control such circumstances. It was such a disappointment that they had provided training.
  • As for the NUG, they had been trying to gain legitimacy in the international community with the support of the public. However, the people desired more than that. Some were even discouraged. There were more and more arrests and killings day after day. So, the public had been looking forward to the big day to come in the very near future.
  • In Kayin, Shan North and Kachin, there were battles between EAOs and the junta army. In Sagaing, Kayar and Chin, there were clashes with local PDFs. There might be more fighting in the days to come.
  • Amidst tight security measures and arrests in Mandalay, various rallies against the military dictatorship were held every day. In Magwe which had been silent, guerrilla revolution gained momentum with frequent activities. As for Yangon, they still had powerful guerrilla activities. As for other states and regions, they had very few public protests.
