Spring Revolution Daily News for 22 July 2023 

The National Unity Government (NUG) 

  • The NUG released a warning about the monsoon storm and its risks from 20 to 28 July. 
  • According to Ministry of Defence-NUG, a combined force of PDFs attacked the junta contingent of about 130 junta soldiers on their way to invade Gantgaw in Magwe Region. 
  • At 10:00 am Thursday, the NUG Central Committee on the Interim Public Administration conducted a meeting (29/2023). 
  • At 3:00 pm Thursday, there was a meeting between Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration-NUG and District People’s Administration. 
  • Minister of Planning, Finance and Investment-NUG claimed that they had been cooperating with financial institutions including the World Bank so that the military junta could not access the foreign currency reserves of Myanmar saved in international banks. 

Revolution Activities 

  • In Sagaing Region, a combined rally of Salingyi and Yinmabin marched against the military dictatorship on Friday. 
  • In Yinmabin Township, the junta army raided Sonechaung Village at about 2:00 am Friday. They also killed 6 PDF members and no less than 6 local people. 
  • In Kalay Township, the displaced children have been suffering from dengue fever. 
  • In Kani Township and Yinmabin Township, there were some attacks via rockets and mortars on the junta bank, offices and stations. 
  • In Shweku Township of Kachin State, there was a guerrilla attack on the junta army near Hsintut Village at about 4:00 pm Thursday. Reportedly, 10 junta soldiers died. 
  • On Thursday, the European Union placed the 7th sanction on Myanmar against the increase of violence and human rights violation since the military coup which overthrew the elected public’s leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021. 
  • On Thursday, the EU slapped sanctions on 6 individuals and an organization in Myanmar. 
  • In Pulaw Township of Taninthayi Region, local PDF caught a junta-appointed administrator alive and set fire to the house of another one. 

Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs) 

  • In Kanpetlet Township of Chin State, 5 junta soldiers died and many others were injured in the battle on Wednesday. 
  • On the border of Shan State and Karenni State, there was a clash between the junta army and the PDF at about 6:00 pm Thursday. 
  • In the area under Karen National Union Brigade (6), 46 junta soldiers including officers died in local battles in June. 
  • In Lashio Township of Shan State, there was a local battle between the junta army and Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army near Mangan Village. Reportedly, there were five casualties among junta soldiers. 
  • In Kyonedoe Township of Kayin State, the junta army fired mortars into Shwe War Chaung Village, injuring two children. 

The Military Council 

  • In Kyaukdagar Township of Bago Region, the junta army set fire to Nanza Village. Reportedly, they also murdered 3 people by burning them to death in a house.  
  • After the incident in which 10 prisoners had run away along with weapons, 7 staff members of Taungoo Prisoner were arrested and sentenced imprisonment. 
  • The five students including the focal person of Eastern Students’ Union Committee, who had been sentenced long-term imprisonment, were sentenced to another 10 years in prison on Thursday. 
  • The junta Embassy in Bangkok announced that PJ passports on the verge of expiration would be renewed starting on 2 August. 
  • According to the junta Minister of Health, there have been a large number of cases of influenza, pneumonia and encephalitis in Yangon. 
  • According to the junta propaganda team, the junta peace team met with three EAOs including the Wa. 
  • On Thursday, the junta Union Election Commission met with 7 political parties at Yangon Regional Hluttaw Building. Reportedly, they inspected the activities in accordance with the political parties’ registration law and by-law. 
  • In Dakhina Thiri Township of Naypyi Taw, the religious ceremony of the Marya Wizaya Buddha image will be held on 1 August, the second full-moon day of Waso. 

Summary on 22 July 

  • Throughout the country, the people’s defensive war against the military junta has increased. There might be more and more attacks on the junta army camps. 
  • The NUG claimed that they would carry out activities so that the military junta could not access the foreign currency reserves. Consequently, the military junta might face hardships and shortages of foreign currency.
