The National Unity Government (NUG)

  • According to Ministry of Defence-NUG, the PDF attacked a police station and the junta army in Pinlebu of Sagaing Region on Tuesday. Reportedly, many junta soldiers died, six others were caught alive and weapons were confiscated.
  • The NUG announced that they had blacklisted and dismissed 40 staff members of agriculture department under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation for conducting a variety of oppression on CDM staff.
  • According to the right to self-defence, the public have been taking part in a People’s Defensive War. The NUG announced that 41 members of the junta armed forces had died and 13 others had been injured on Thursday.
  • U Aung Myo Min, Union Minister of Human Rights, said that the NUG did not politically rely on the United Nations alone and they had been carrying out all-round activities.

Revolution Activities

  • Total Company announced that they had decided to resign, judging deteriorating conditions of human rights and the judiciary system after the coup in Myanmar.
  • In Pale Township of Sagaing Region, there were allegedly rape cases of junta soldiers against some women from Nwein village, native village of former major general Kyaw San - former minister of Cooperatives, Culture and Information in the tenure of previous military government.
  • Pale PDF made an announcement warning that they would take serious action against those who join the junta Pyusawti training in their township.
  • PDF Regiment (3) warned that people were not to use the Kalay-Tamu-Asia road from 6:00 pm to 5:00 am due to a military operation in the area.
  • Starting from Friday morning, the junta army set fire to people’s houses in Mitha village of Ye-U Township and along Monywa-Mandalay road section. Reportedly, some local people were arrested as well.
  • As a 317-day protest, a combined rally of Salingyi North and Yinmabin East marched against the military dictatorship on Friday.
  • At about 1:00 pm Thursday, the junta army raided Chantha village in Ye-U Township, including a monastery and church. Reportedly, they also took away the public’s belongings by force.
  • In a village of Shwebo Township, there was a protest against the military dictatorship on Friday morning.
  • According to highway transportation services, there were instructions of the military junta that 19 things, including goldware and electronics, were not allowed to be carried in six states and regions, including Sagaing.
  • At Kawlin market, a junta soldier was stabbed to death in the neck by a man on Friday morning.
  • Starting from Friday morning, military helicopters, drones and fighter jets flew over Sagaing area many times.
  • According to Mandalay Monks’ Union, the military junta shared so-called books on investigations of electoral fraud among monks for a public talk. The action was aimed at causing division between monks and the public.
  • In Loikaw of Karenni State, ammunition was fired near Technology University in Mailone Ward at about 11:00 am Friday. Reportedly, a house caught on fire.
  • In Titain Township of Chin State, local CDF conducted an attack at the junta army stationing in Hiang Zing village at about 1:45 am Friday. Reportedly, about 15 junta soldiers died and a CDF member was injured.
  • In Tightgyi Township of Yangon Region, three mines exploded at about 6:00 am Friday. According to local residents, there were two casualties amongst the junta armed forces.
  • In Thingangyun Township, junta soldiers shot at two youth in front of Asia Smile Hotel. Reportedly, a young man was hit with a bullet, injured and beaten.
  • In Myaing Township of Magwe Region, a rally of the Basic Education General Strike Committee, in cooperation with the public, carried out an evening march against the military dictatorship on Thursday.

Ethnic Armed Organizations

  • A combined force of Karen National Union, Karenni National Progressive Party and Chin National Force welcomed the announcement on Myanmar’s affairs by the UN special envoy office and requested some information to be added to the statement.
  • On Thursday, there was a clash between the junta army and KDF near Belu Stream. According to KDF, one of their members was injured.
  • In Phapun District under control of KNU Regiment (5), there were constant battles from 18th to 20th January. According to Mutraw newsletter, two junta soldiers died and two military cars were damaged. Due to wild gunfire, two people from Tumawde Area were injured.

The Military Council

  • There were a lot of criticism as the junta minister of social welfare supported her own mother under the government support programme for senior citizens.
  • The junta leader Min Aung Hlaing said that the military was just on the path of democracy in accordance with 2008 Constitution and that they had been doing this with care as much as possible.
  • Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture made arrangements to donate books on 2020 voters’ list, published by UEC, to monasteries and nunneries, which were not eligible to vote in accordance with 2008 Constitution.
  • On Thursday morning, there was a working meeting between the junta National Unity and Peace Development Coordination Committee and the group of political parties, puppet of the military junta, at NRPC Hall in Nay Pyi Taw.
  • The junta minister of population and immigration said that they had been implementing foreigner management for systematic permanent residence of foreigners in the country.
  • The junta leader said that since they took office, they had been working to promote local production for economic growth of the country and the main point was for all people not to starve.
  • The junta leader said that the former NLD government had coordination meetings with him very often for amendment of Section (59-F) contained in the 2008 Constitution.
  • The junta navy chief officer said that they had changed from the navy with limited capacity for military operation at sea to the navy with influence on the exclusive economic zone and along the sea boundary.
  • At the junta meeting on Thursday, the junta leader said that the public were getting angry for lack of property due to different developments in urban and rural areas.
  • The junta leader Min Aung Hlaing said that like parents, the government just wanted to see prosperity of the country and they were not like dictators.
  • At the meeting on Thursday, the junta leader said that there was not peace in the country due to the excuses of ethnic affairs, federalism and democracy.

Summary on 21 January

  • Wherever he goes, the junta leader Min Aung Hlaing has been explaining why he has seized power. With the use of religion, he has been preparing to share it with monks, who are not eligible to vote according to 2008 Constitution. Such activity is like dividing the public and
  • the monks. As for most monks, they disapproved of it. It also highlights that he does not hesitate even to use religion to grasp power.
  • zIn some areas of Sagaing and Chin, schools were reopened under management of the NUG. It is like their ground administration has gradually come alive.
  • In Loikaw of Karenni State, there were still heavy battles between the junta armed forces and local defence forces. With a great loss, the junta army conducted air strikes there.
  • From the words of the junta leader at the meeting, it was visible that he had been talking nonsense as if he were out of his mind. It highlights the fact that the country could not be ruled without approval of the public.
