The National Unity Government (NUG)

  • The NUG announced that sales of land and ownership documents by municipal departments in Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon and Mandalay in the tenure of the military junta were not legal and such land would be made state-owned in the administration of the public’s government.
  • U Aung Kyi Nyunt, a CEC member of NLD, said that over 70% of more than 38 million eligible voters cast their votes in the 2020 General Election with a landslide victory of NLD. Despite playing a trick with ordinary mistakes, the military junta would not be able to give strong evidence to the contrary.
  • On PVTV, Dr. Zaw Wai Soe, Minister of Health and Education-NUG, said that the military dictatorship would surely fall as the public keep rising and the military junta keep falling.
  • The NUG announced the list of bond agents, excluding some of them for security concerns.
  • With the leadership of Mindat Township Public Administration in Chin State, 6282 students from 136 villages have been learning a new curriculum.
  • According to Dimawso PDF on Saturday, the NUG supported 20 lakh MMK to families of two PDF members who had lost their lives in Karenni State.

Revolution Activities

  • In Monywa of Sagaing Region, the opening ceremony of a street by the military junta was not successful on 14 January and thus, they had prejudice over that. Reportedly, they were after members of the Monywa-Chindwin Yoema Media for publishing such news.
  • As a 312-day protest, a combined rally of Salingyi North and Yinmabin East marched against the military dictatorship on Sunday.
  • In a village of Shwebo Township, there was a protest against the military dictatorship on Sunday morning.
  • On Sunday morning, basic education students’ union conducted a guerrilla protest, hanging an anti-junta banner at the Kyaukka traffic lights in Monywa.
  • In Myaung Township, local people, protected by PDF members, marched for the NUG and against the military dictatorship on Saturday.
  • Despite invasive attacks at villages by the junta armed forces in Pale Township, there was a strike against the military dictatorship on Saturday evening.
  • In Alone Township of Yangon Region, Special Task Agency of Burma – STA blew up two bombs at the Htoo gas station at about 4:00 am Sunday.
  • On Sunday morning, there was a bomb explosion at Kyauktada Township Electricity Manager Officer on Traders’ Road in downtown Yangon.
  • In Shwepyitha Township, a junta car knocked down bicycles and motorbikes in the entrance street to Zaygone Market, saying that they were blocking the way.
  • According to Yangon Regional Defence Force on Saturday, they conducted attacks on the military junta and their fellows from 8 to 16 January and two members of the junta armed forces died.
  • In Dawei Township of Taninthayi Region, the junta army arrested a man from Zawwa village on Saturday with the accusation of having contact with armed groups and beat him to death during interrogation.
  • In Phakant Township of Kachin State, two junta-appointed administrators were shot dead at about 10:30 am Saturday.
  • In Longlone Township, a combined rally of youth and basic education students’ union protested against the military dictatorship on Sunday morning, chanting slogans - ‘No other tower of strength except for the public’.
  • According to Dawei Youth Revolutionary Movement Strike Committee, they provided food items to those in need in Dawei, under the theme - ‘Fight together, help each other’.
  • In Myaing Township of Magwe Region, the junta army killed 3 residents of Letyetma village and burnt their bodies.
  • At about 3:00 pm Saturday, there was a mine explosion near Ayemya Thaya modern market in Myitgyina, which would be opened by the junta minister of social welfare in a ceremony.
  • In Myawaddy Township of Kayin State, a gas truck was shot at about 1:00 pm Sunday on the Myawaddy-Kawkarait Asia Road. Reportedly, the driver died and the vehicle was burnt.
  • In Phakant Township, U Tanbaung Lasai, chair of Kachin Culture Team in Hmawyan village, was shot dead by an unknown group on Saturday.

Ethnic Armed Organizations

  • In the south of Kawkarait under the control of the KNU Regiment (6), there were heavy battles between the junta armed forces and KNLa, causing casualties on both sides.
  • According to Chair of All Burma Students' Democratic Front (ABSDF), a signed party of National Ceasefire Agreement, they have started to fight against the junta armed forces led by Min Aung Hlaing.
  • In Phapun District under control of KNU Regiment (5), there were 119 battles between the junta army + their servents BGF and KNLA from 1 to 15 January. According to Mutraw newsletter, 54 members of the junta armed forces died and 48 others were injured.
  • In Phalan Township of Chin State, the junta army was attacked with various mines by CNDF at about 3:00 am Friday. Reportedly, five junta soldiers died, some others were injured and the rest of them had to stay overnight at Barr camp.
  • In Loikaw of Karenni State, a combined force of PDFs attacked junta soldiers on secret patrol at district police office on Saturday morning. Reportedly, 6 junta soldiers died.
  • In Muse Township of Shan North, there was a fighting between MNDAA and the junta army at about 1:00 pm Saturday.
  • Pa-O PDF announced on Friday that two regiments were assigned for military operation areas of their members.

The Military Council

  • In Tantyan Township of Shan North, Manpan People’s Army under the military junta had been recruiting by force even in town since the beginning of January.
  • Citing the announcement of International Committee of the Red Cross Myanmar, the junta media said that household items and medicines had been provided to hundreds of IDPs, who had to run away due to battles since mid-December 2021, in Myawaddy Township of Kayin State.
  • The military junta announced that among those who came back from other countries, ten people were tested positive with SARS-CoV-2 Variant Omicron on Friday and Saturday.
  • According to the junta media, a camp of local PDF was cleared in Madei conservation area of Kamma Township in Magwe Region and three PDF members were arrested.
  • The junta leader Min Aung Hlaing instructed to give priority to build a fish market in Myeik.
  • The junta leader called for other businesses, in addition to the fishery sector, as Taninthayi Region was rich with minerals.
  • According to the junta ministry of health, there was a local outbreak of 111 people infected with Covid-19 at Phaunggyi Central Staff University in Hleku Township of Yangon Region.
  • In his tour in Taninthayi Region, the junta leader suggested that each individual consumes only about 6 viss of oil per year.
  • Reportedly, there was a lawsuit against second police officer Cherry Htet, bodyguard of State Counsellor Daw Aung San Su Kyi, under the section (505-a).

Summary on 16 January

  • The junta leader took a trip to Taninthayi Region and explained the reasons for the coup. Unlike other trips, he did not mention about electric vehicles. He also urged to do other businesses in the area based on the fishery sector.
  • The junta army seems to have the problem of very few soldiers. In recent days, they and their people’s army had been recruiting by force.
  • In Kayin, Karenni, Sagaing and Chin, the junta armed forces carried out invasive attacks against revolution forces with air strikes and ground battles. Maybe, they did so to show the international community that they rule the country.
