Spring Revolution Daily News for 12 August 2023 

The National Unity Government (NUG) 

  • On Thursday, the NUG Central Committee on the Interim Public Administration conducted a meeting. Reportedly, the Chair of the Committee and Union Prime Minister of the NUG called for the establishment of mutual understanding by helping each other and making an effort for the completion of the revolution as soon as possible. 
  • Union Minister of Defence-NUG claimed that it was necessary to sharply remove those who take up the arms and bully the public, from the PDFs if such kind of people were included. 
  • According to Ministry of Defence-NUG, a combined force of Yoma Battalion and local PDF attacked Nyaungbintha Police Station in Phyuu Township of Bago Region on Wednesday. Reportedly, 2 junta policemen died and 4 others were injured. 
  • According to Ministry of Defence-NUG, there was a local battle between the junta army and a combined force of Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) + PDFs near Thamin Ingone Village starting from 4:00 am on Wednesday. Reportedly, over 30 junta soldiers died and many weapons were confiscated. 
  • Ministry of Labour-NUG has conducted a campaign from 1 to 31 August to support CDM staff, CDM railway staff, PDFs and the IDPs. 

Revolution Activities 

  • In Kani Township and Yinmabin Township of Sagaing Region, there were bomb attacks via drone on the camps of Pyusawti and the junta troops at about 9:00 am Thursday. 
  • In Yinmabin Township, a rally of Shwe Nwe Thwe led an anti-junta march on Friday. 
  • In Sagaing Township, the junta army conducted an aerial bomb attack using a fighter jet on Kan-Oo Monastery in Talaing Village on Friday morning. They then carried out a raid. Reportedly, 3 people including infants lost their lives. 
  • In Ngazun Township of Mandalay Region, there were bomb attacks via drone on the junta troops and the camp of Pyusawti in Yelethaung Western Village at about 1:00 pm Wednesday. Reportedly, 4 junta soldiers including an officer died. 
  • In Thabaitgyin Township, the junta armed forces have been setting fire to local villages in Dagaung Area. Consequently, more than 10,000 people have had to run away. 
  • In Myaing Township of Magwe Region, there were attacks on the junta inspection gates on the way to Mandalay and Pakkoku on 8 August. Reportedly, 3 junta members were injured. 
  • In Pauk Township, the medical teams of local PDF provided healthcare services to the public on Wednesday. 
  • In Nyaunglebin Township of Bago Region, local PDFs conducted a surprise check on Shwekyin-Nyaunglebin Road Section for the safety of the public. 
  • In Paungty Township, Kyaw Thu Aung, a junta informer, was shot dead at about 12:30 pm Thursday. 
  • In Ywar Ngan Township of Southern Shan State, local defence force attacked the junta army stationing in Nabangyi Village on 1 August. Reportedly, 2 junta soldiers died. 
  • In Kutkhine Township and Muse Township of Northern Shan State, 5 civilians lost lives within two weeks due to the junta army and 9 others including a child aged 9 got injured. 
  • The strike committees have called on the public to sharply boycott the junta army products such as alcoholic drinks, cigarettes and soft drinks. 
  • The Blood Money Campaign would reportedly call on the Singaporian Government to take action against Myanmar’s military junta using Singapore as a middle country for the matters including money and weapons. 
  • According to Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), up to 3912 people have lost their lives due to the junta armed forces from the military coup to 10 August. 

Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs) 

  • In Duplaya District of Kayin State, two soldiers from the junta army Ka-Ma-Ya (118), along with weapons, defected to Karen National Union (KNU). Reportedly, each of them was rewarded with 50,000 baht. 
  • On Kachin Martyrs’ Day, the Vice-Chair of Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) stated that the military junta has had a great loss day after day as they have had battlefields all over the country, and thus, the ethnic revolution forces have been approaching their aspiration. 
  • In the press conference of the KNU on Thursday, the General Secretary claimed that despite having signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA), there is no reason to follow it as the military junta already breached the agreement first. 
  • In the press conference after the 17th Congress on Thursday, the KNU made clear their four political objectives. 
  • In Lechar Township of Southern Shan State, there has been intense military tension against Shan State Progressive Party. Reportedly, the junta army has been strengthening their forces by recruiting the members of local militias including Pa-O National Organization. 
  • In Demoso Township of Karenni State, the junta army had a great loss in the battle on Thursday. Reportedly, a large number of weapons were confiscated as well. 
  • In Lashio Township of Northern Shan State, there were battles between the junta army and Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) on Wednesday and Thursday. 

The Military Council 

  • The new junta Minister of Home Affairs left for Vientiane of Laos on Thursday morning to attend the 8th ASEAN Ministerial meeting on Drugs. 
  • The military junta announced that each person would be sold 40 tincups of rice and a viss of oil per day at the People’s Square in Dagon Township of Yangon Region starting from Friday. 
  • The military junta set up the committee on controlling the cost of living. They would carry out the activities such as special sales for basic food items including rice and oil. They would also control the costs of goods. 
  • The junta Yangon Regional Minister of Border affairs and Security claimed that it was necessary to regularly check the transportation of goods so that illegal items could not be included. 
  • According to the junta Union Election Commission, 12 political parties will conduct nationwide campaigns. Among them, 7 parties have been approved of their registration and the 5 remaining ones have been in the process of having their activities checked. 
  • Myanmar Airway International announced that there would be direct flights to Russia from Yangon and Mandalay starting on 5 September. 
  • According to military sources, Bri-Gen Htein Lin was appointed to be military training chief officer and there were changes for the positions of dozens of army officers. 
  • Citing military sources from Naypyidaw, Khit Thit media mentioned that despite the junta’s effort to seek the approval of State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi that she did not support the NUG and the PDF, and she would join hands with the junta army for the country’s peace and stability, they failed. 

Summary on 12 August 

  • The military junta announced that they would sell rice and oil in Yangon. However, they still cannot control the high costs of living including the dollar, gold and fuel oil. 
  • The KNU claimed that there was no reason to follow the NCA as the military junta themselves broke it. Consequently, there might be more tension between the junta army and the KNU.
