Six political prisoners, including two MPs receive two-year prison sentences

Six political prisoners from Pathein Prison, including two members of parliament (MPs) from the Thabaung Township Hluttaw, were sentenced to two years in prison by a military tribunal court on the morning of 3 March, according to staff from Pathein Prison.

The six political prisoners were five men and a woman from Thabaung Township, according to prison officials.

“A total of six political prisoners were sentenced this morning, including Aung Aung Oo, an MP from the Tharpaung Hluttaw (Regional Assembly), and Thein Tun, a parliament member of the Pyithu Hluttaw (People's Assembly). All were sentenced to two years each under Section 25 of the Disaster Management Law”, he added.

Both MPs were arrested by the military council and police on 30 March, 2021, according to a Hluttaw member.

More than 300 political prisoners were illegally detained in Pathein Prison after the military coup, and 25 of them have been sentenced by a prison court, according to Pathein Prison staff.
