U Win Naung, a retired Myanmar Army captain, was shot and killed in Thaton Township, in Mon State, by a Thaton-based people's defence force, according to local residents.

U Win Naung lived in Kyarban Village, in Duyinseik Village Tract, Thaton Township was shot and killed in a shop located in his house at about 12:00 p.m. on 3 October.

According to residents he sustained gunshot wounds to his head and died instantly.

A Kyarban resident said: “He had served in Light Infantry Battalion (206) and was also a member of the Pyu Saw Htee [military-aligned militia] group. As far as I know, He always carried a pistol with him.”

Before his death U Win Naung was an intelligence chief for the Pyu Saw Htee and previously served with Light Infantry Battalion 206 based in Kyarban Village, according to a local source who spoke to Mizzima.

At the time of reporting it was not which organisation was responsible for killing Captain Win Naung.

His funeral took place at his home in Kyarban Village on 5 October.
