Maung Weik, a prominent Myanmar tycoon who provided testimony as a prosecution witness in the case against State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi, announced on June 29 via his Facebook account that he has been released from prison and has returned home.

Maung Weik, the owner of Sae Paing Company, was detained after the coup, and testified as a prosecution witness in some cases against the State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi, Nay Pyi Taw Mayor Dr. Myo Aung, and Mandalay District Prime Minister Dr. Zaw Myint Maung.

In March 2021, Maung Weik was arrested by the junta. Subsequently, Myawaddy TV, controlled by the military regime, aired a video file in which he testified to giving a bribe to Aung San Suu Kyi.

After that, the junta filed a lawsuit in two separate cases against State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi for accepting US$550,000 from Maung Weik and sentenced her to three years in prison for each case.

During the trial, while testifying as a witness for the prosecution, Maung Weik stated that he had donated the money to the Daw Khin Kyi Foundation. In a gesture of respect towards Aung San Suu Kyi, he turned to her and bowed down in the courtroom.
