Political science student sentenced to three years in prison

A political science student from Yangon University has been sentenced to three years in prison by the military junta, an official from Yangon University Students’ Union said.

Thinzar Htet Moe, a second-year political science student at Yangon University, was sentenced to three years in prison under section 505 (A) of the penal code, by a Bago civilian court on 17 March.

“She was arrested in April last year on her way from Yangon to Bago. She was sentenced to three years in prison under section 505 (A) on 17 March this year after she had been detained for almost a year. The military junta has suppressed its opponents using different tactics. So, we must be determined to fight against the military junta at all cost”, said Aung Kaung Satt, the Yangon University Student Union chairperson.

Thinzar Htet Moe and 14 other protesters were arrested by junta troops on 24 April 2021 and held in prison charged with breaking section 505 (A) of the penal code.

“The enemy detained and mercilessly slaughtered university students and young people in order to suppress their revolutionary spirit. However, they were unable to change our political stance or halt our fearless steps. The spirits of our comrades in prison will not be weakened by the prison walls. We will show the military junta that their actions just make us fight even harder’,’ said a student activist.

More than fifteen students from Yangon University have been detained by the military junta since the coup, according to the Yangon University Students’ Union.
