State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi said in her opening address delivered at a meeting with local people held on February 25 in Myawaddy city, Kayin State that mere talk on peace without an actual desire would not extinguish the fire of civil war.
“Our road to peace will take longer if we don’t have an actual desire for peace, merely talking of peace and work with greed, anger and ignorance. It has already taken a long time,” she said.
She urged people to work for peace together since peace plays a crucial role in the economic development of the country, she added.
“I have spoken time and again for restoring peace in the country. It must start from our mind. We can get peace only if we have a real and strong desire for getting peace,” she said.
She further said that Myanmar has had civil war for almost 73 years since regaining independence without any period of absolute peace and war.
The State Counsellor requested to people to work together with the government to restore peace to the country as people had to struggle for their life and survival.
