NUG’s foreign minister offers possible assistance to small Myanmar community in Israel

The foreign minister of the National Unity Government (NUG) pledged they would to try their best to provide “possible assistance” to the Myanmar community in war-torn Israel.

The pledge was made in an online meeting over Zoom between the Union Minister for Foreign Affairs Zin Mar Aung and various Myanmar people in Israel held on 22 October.

A Myanmar citizen in Israel who participated in the meeting told Mizzima: “Union Minister Zin Mar Aung encouraged us, and she pledged to hold more discussions about possible assistance.”

The source also added that the minister said that political leaders and people are experiencing many challenges, and that they feel sorry as they cannot fully protect Myanmar citizens in Israel.

The Zoom meeting was attended by over 40 Myanmar people.

The number of Myanmar people in Israel is estimated at more than 250, and most of them are living in the business hub of Tel Aviv and nearby areas.

The Myanmar Embassy in Tel Aviv announced on 17 October that they will arrange a charter flight for those who want to go back home, but no one has reported for this programme.

Israeli officials said that more than 1,400 people have been killed in Israel, 4,500 have been injured, and Hamas have taken 203 hostages, believed to be held in Gaza.

The Palestinian Health Authority also stated that at least 3,400 people have been killed in Gaza and more than 12,000 have been injured. Hamas puts the death toll closer to 5,000.
