The National Unity Government (NUG) Ministry of Defense announced the expansion of the Central Commission of Inquiry into Military Crimes that will investigate and prosecute military crimes committed since the coup, in an attempt to bring justice to victims and establish the rule of law, on 28 February.

The commission was formed under the leadership of the NUG’s Deputy Defence Minister at the 36th meeting of the NUG Ministry of Defense on 3 December 2021 and it has now been expanded to include the participation of legal professionals, Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) staff, judicial staff and Ministry of Justice officials to investigate cases of military crimes and submit their findings to the NUG.

The statement added that the perpetrators will be prosecuted under both civilian and military judicial systems. If necessary, district-level commissions of inquiry will be set up in the affected areas.
