NUG criticises China for teargassing IDPs on Myanmar side of border

Chinese border guards were called inhumane by the National Unity Government (NUG) after they fired teargas at displaced people on the Myanmar side of the border

Following junta artillery and airstrikes on southern Laukkai Town and intense fighting in the area of the town, in northern Shan State near the Chinese border, locals fled towards the border fence.

Video footage shows how the Chinese border guards then fired tear gas across the border into Myanmar to prevent the displaced people from moving closer to the border, even though they were still in Myanmar and had no intention of crossing into China.

“As far as we know, the displaced people moved to border milestone 127 since the sound of heavy weapons got louder at border milestone 125. While they were moving, the incident as shown in the video occurred”, said Li Kyar Win, a spokesperson for the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA).

The NUG Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, Dr. Tu Hkawng, said: "I condemn this inhumane act. They can come near the borderline, but we cannot go near it. This is not an invasion. They should stop patrolling over CCTV and alarming us whenever we get closer to the fence on our side. They have the right to do whatever they want in their country, but it is an insult to act however they want across the border. That does not align with international law.”

The NUG Minister of Human Rights, U Aung Myo Min said to Mizzima on 27 November: "Regardless of whether [a country] has signed the Geneva Convention on refugees or not, this is a situation where humanitarian assistance should be demonstrated. We encourage neighboring countries to graciously offer a temporary safe haven for people displaced from dangerous areas and provide asylum for them.
