NLD youth member dies during interrogation in Mandalay

A National League for Democracy youth remember was allegedly tortured to death by junta security forces in Mandalay on the evening of 3 January.

Thein Soe (a.k.a) Than Soe, a member of the National League for Democracy's (NLD) township youth working committee, Mandalay region was tortured to death during interrogation, according to Taungtha NLD's information officer Zaw Htwe.

Ko Thein Soe was tortured in an interrogation center at the school in Taungtha Township, where some 70 troops of the junta are stationed. His body was not released and his family have not been informed.

Zaw Htwe alleged that former Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) information officer Ko Pyae Phyo Maung and two other organizers often torture detainees.

The Taungtha township Police Station issued a warrant on June 2021 for Ko Thein Soe, a 28-year-old member of the NLD as he marched in the front row of an anti-coup protest column holding a flag.

He was arrested by the junta troops on the night of December 26, stripped naked and tortured at the interrogation center for a week, according to local sources.

Locals said before Ko Thein Soe’s arrest, a man was arrested on December 20 as a female informant (Dalan) from Ward 16 in Myingyan township, passed on information to junta forces and also died during interrogation. The junta troops are said to have destroyed the body.
