NLD says junta arrests of their members including Aung San Suu Kyi now reach 645

The National League for Democracy (NLD) says the total tally of unjustly arrested party members, including Aung San Suu Kyi, has now reached 645, in a statement made on 18 March.

These include 107 parliament members among those people who were unjustly arrested and detained. Of those, 14 have been released and the remaining 92 are still in custody.

The list was compiled by the Human Rights Violations Documentation Team of the NLD.

A total of 16 NLD members, including a member of parliament, were killed during interrogation, torture, or inadequate medical care in prisons, the NLD statement said.

In addition, the junta made a total of 98 incursions and attacks on party offices across Myanmar including the party headquarters in Yangon.

The statement said that most of the incidents took place when the Military Council issued Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Similarly, the houses and buildings of the party members, parliament representatives, and senior executives of the party who were arrested under Section 505 of the Penal Code were illegally entered and their belongings were removed by junta troops. Moreover, houses and other properties were illegally confiscated and sealed off while the relevant courts had not yet made a final decision.

The homes and other properties of 155 party members, including 93 NLD parliament members, were sealed off.

A total of 2,123 people have reportedly been killed across the country since the military coup. The statement said that the total numbers were collected and compiled only by the NLD’s Human Rights Violations Documentation Team, and there could be more in reality.

About 13,000 people were arrested illegally across the country from 1 February 2021 to 14 March 2022.
