Nearly 40 political prisoners moved to solitary confinement in Mandalay

A total of 38 political prisoners were held in solitary confinement at Mandalay central prison for their alleged involvement in marking the historic pro-democracy uprising in Myanmar in 1988.

At the central prison in Obo Ward, the prisoners shouted slogans against the Myanmar dictatorship on 8 August 2021 which is the 33rd anniversary of deadly protests in the country.

The organizers were beaten by prison authorities.

A source close to the prison department said, “About 38 prisoners were kept in solitary cells and they will be held there for two weeks.”

The incident occurred at ward 3 of the prison where about 700 prisoners were held as they took part in the recent Spring Revolution caused by the military coup on 1 February.
