Myanmar junta burned down over 4,000 houses in April

Myanmar junta soldiers burned down more than 4,000 houses across the country during April, according to a 3 May report by the National Unity Government’s (NUG’s) Fire Service Department.

The highest number of burnings during April was in Sagaing Region where the junta destroyed 2,477 houses.

Junta set fires killed 10 people in Sagaing Region and one person in Magway Region during April. They also set fire to three religious buildings, one clinic and four schools in Sagaing Region.

The NUG Fire Service Department collected figures from independent news reports, civil society organisations and local residents. It expects the figures to rise as it speaks to more people.

The junta burned down 60,459 across Myanmar between February 2021 and February 2023, according to a March 2023 report from Data for Myanmar.
