Myanmar apologizes for fighter jet incursion over Thai territory

The Thai government said Friday that neighbouring Myanmar has apologized after one of its fighter jets crossed into Thai airspace on a bombing run in the border area, forcing authorities to scramble jets and evacuate hundreds of schoolchildren, AP reports.

Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said Thailand did not want to escalate the incident, which took place on Thursday over Phop Phra district in Thailand’s Tak province. Local authorities evacuated villages and schools in the area. Teachers at Wale School led over 200 elementary and middle school students from their classrooms to fortified buildings inside the school grounds for safety.

“The military attaches have spoken to each other, and they have apologized, and our foreign ministries have talked. This may seem like a serious incident, but it depends on us if we want to escalate this. Currently the two sides enjoy a good relationship and are able to talk,' Prayuth said, reports AP. told reporters at a public appearance.

Thailand scrambled F-16s after a Myanmar jet involved in clashes with anti-coup fighters violated its airspace, officials said Thursday, as a regional envoy urging dialogue visited Yangon.

Bangkok deployed two fighter planes after 'an unidentified aircraft crossed into Thailand in Tak province' before disappearing from radar, the Royal Thai Air Force said in a statement.

Thailand's air attache in Yangon has been asked to 'coordinate with related agencies in Myanmar to send a warning and find preventive measures in the future', the air force added.

An official in Tak province told AFP that 'a few bullets' had landed across the border in Thailand during fighting in Myanmar on Wednesday.

A warning message was sent from Thailand to the Myanmar authorities, according to a Thai official.

Myanmar's military has carried out airstrikes and artillery shelling during five days of 'fierce fighting' in neighbouring Kayin state, said Major General Saw Nerdah Mya of the Karen National Defence Organisation, one of a number of armed groups resisting the country"s security forces.

The clashes came as Cambodian foreign minister and ASEAN envoy Prak Sokhonn visited Myanmar for five days in an attempt to revive stalled diplomacy between the junta and rebels.

Kayin State near the Thai border has seen heavy fighting, with PDF fighters conducting operations alongside troops from the Karen National Defence Organisation, an established rebel group who have expressed support for anti-junta fighters.
