The Bangladesh government is reportedly investigating an incident in which two mortar shells fired from Myanmar landed in Bangladesh territory on the afternoon of Sunday 28 August, according to the Dhaka Tribune.

The shells landed in an area near Tambru in the Bandarban area. They did not explode, but caused panic among residents who saw them.

It was the second such incident in several days.

The Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen said there will be an investigation to determine if the firing of mortar shells into Bangladesh territory was intentional or an accident. "Then we will strongly protest it with them [Myanmar]”, he said.

As a result of the incident Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) increased its presence on the Bangladesh-Myanmar border in Bandarban.
