Malaysia PM says ASEAN should change non-interference principle to deal with Myanmar

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has strongly called on revision of the non-interference principle adopted in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) charter as part of the efforts to resolve conflicts and violence in Myanmar.

Ibrahim made the statement during the 42nd ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo, Indonesia, which has just concluded. Escalating violence in junta-ruled Myanmar dominated the three-day meeting.

But there has been "no significant progress" on implementing a peace plan aimed at ending bloodshed in Myanmar, Indonesian President Joko Widodo has said.
