The old man was unable to flee his home as he was seriously ill although other residents managed to escape as junta forces entered Hnankhar village in Gangaw Township of Magway Region on 18 August afternoon.

He was unable to answer questions about the whereabouts of People’s Defence Force members reportedly operating in the area, as soldiers hit his face and shoulders, according to the victim’s video record made after the soldiers left before he died.

“I was just at home as I was ill. I also have medical treatment document. But they asked about the hideouts of PDF members. As I replied that I did not know about them, they kicked me and punched me,” the old man answered in the video record.

Villagers took him to the forest to avoid further potential attacks, where he was given medical treatment. However, his condition worsened and as he was brought back home his condition worsened and he died on the way.

Locals said the junta forces frequently raided the village in the past, and forcibly took valuable property and the domestic animals of the villagers.
