KIA and junta troops clash outside Waingmaw Township

The Kachin independence Army (KIA) and junta troops fought each other for six hours in a field east of Waingmaw Township in Kachin State between 9:00a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on 19 July.

"I started to hear gunfire and explosions from around 9 o'clock in the morning. The clashes happened outside the township, so in the city, all the people were still moving around normally", said a local resident.

Light Infantry Battalion 58 based in Waingmaw Township fired at least five artillery shells into the battlefield over the course of the fighting.

There has been ongoing fighting between KIA and junta forces in Waingmaw Township since 9 July when the junta increased its activities in Waingmaw. Currently, the situation between KIA and junta troops in Waingmaw Township is tense.
