The Dagon University Students' Union has released a letter written by a comrade of the student union in Insein Prison about the torture of political prisoners and the lack of health care in the facility.

The letter from a union comrade in prison was released at 10:30 p.m. on 16 February.

The letter described the torture of political prisoners in Insein Prison, calling on foreign organizations and the media to raise the issue.

The letter sent by the comrade in prison includes concerns expressed about medical treatment.

"Nothing is effectively done even while under surveillance at the prison hospital at the time of applying for medical treatment at the outpatient clinic for the patient who suddenly had high blood pressure and seemed to have a stroke.”

“Moreover, he was sent to and interrogated at the interrogation centre. He suffered nerve damage from the chronic torture during interrogation. As a result, he started to lose consciousness frequently and now he loses consciousness more often. The roommates were watching for him and he lost consciousness for 15 minutes or 20 minutes at first, but now he loses consciousness twice in 30 minutes. Every time he fainted, he was taken to hospital, but there was still no treatment or medicine provided," the account notes.

The letter also includes a story about a man who was hit by a car during the Kyeemyindaing strike and was beaten and interrogated at the interrogation centre. He received an X-ray of his skull, showing the damage. He is suffering from a headache and nose bleeds due to the injuries. He needs to be admitted to an outpatient clinic to examine his injuries but is not being provided with treatment.

The comrades in the prison said that the incidents in this letter were known only to those who had witnessed them, and that it was not known how many similar incidents have taken place elsewhere.

The letter claims the actions highlight the irresponsible behaviour of the junta Military Council.

"Similar incidents may occur in another place at the same time in assessing the nationwide situation. Therefore, I call on the international community and relevant organizations in Myanmar to provide adequate medical care and assistance for political prisoners and other detainees in the prisons,” the writer says.
