Daily COVID-19 cases continue to slow after a high in October 2020, according to JHU CSSE COVID-19 Data.

A total of 605 cases were recorded on 14 January, in comparison with a high of 2,158 recorded on 10 October. As of 16 January, Myanmar had recorded a total of 133,378 COVID-19 cases with 2,926 deaths and 116,610 recovered.

Myanmar’s death rate is 54 per million, significantly less than say the toll in the United States which stands at 1,210 per million.

The Myanmar government and the Ministry of Health and Sports have been working hard to prevent the spread of the pandemic. Stay at Home orders and other restrictions are still in place in many areas. The restrictions have had a serious effect on businesses, events and employment.

The global death toll from Covid-19 surpassed two million on Friday, with the World Health Organization (WHO) urging mass vaccinations as the pandemic progresses at a record pace.

As of 1825 GMT on Friday, at least 2,000,066 people worldwide had been confirmed dead of the virus that first emerged in Wuhan, China, in late 2019, according to an AFP tally.

A WHO team is currently visiting China to investigate the cause of the pandemic.
