On 31 March, former police sub-inspector Cherry Htet, a former bodyguard of detained State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi, was sentenced to another two years in prison under section 505 (a) of the Penal Code, according to a source close to the court.

Cherry Htet had two charges brought against her for violating laws related to police conduct. She had already been sentenced to three years imprisonment in a previous case.

She was accused of violating Section 505 (a) for: Facebook posts she made on 6,7 and 14 March; being in contact with the NLD member of parliament, Thiri Yadana, in June; sharing news published by the National Unity Government (NUG); and giving interviews to foreign news outlets.

According to reports she will be transferred to Yamethin Prison.

Cherry Htet was first arrested in Nay Pyi Taw in September last year before being sentenced to three years imprisonment.

She served on Suu Kyi’s personal security team during foreign and domestic trips under the National League for Democracy (NLD) government and worked for the Special Branch’s anti-terrorism unit.
