Several notable personalities were released in the prison amnesty on 4 January to mark the 75th anniversary of Myanmar independence.

The State Administration Council (SAC) has released the ousted National League for Democracy (NLD) government's Minister of Religious Affairs and Culture Thura U Aung Ko, Daw Than Myint Aung, a philanthropist, writer, and member of the Yangon City Development Committee during the civilian-led government, and renowned writer Htin Lin Oo.

"Thura U Aung Ko was released from Insein Prison on Tuesday evening. Daw Than Myint Aung and U Htin Lin Oo were also released on Wednesday. On Independence Day, the Military Council released some people detained under Section 505 (a) and those sentenced to less than a year in prison,” said a senior lawyer who did not want to be identified.

On 14 March, 2022, the Yangon Region Court of Justice under the Military Council sentenced Thura U Aung Ko to 12 years of hard labour and imprisonment for alleged corruption, and on 27 December, 2021, writer Daw Than Myint Aung was sentenced to three years of hard labour and imprisonment under Section 505 (a) for incitement.

U Htin Lin Oo, a former NLD information officer and writer, was sentenced to three years in prison with hard labour on 22 February, 2022.

On 1 February 2021, as the Military staged its coup, the two renowned writers Daw Than Myint Aung and U Htin Lin Oo were arrested for incitement.
