Foreign embassies in Yangon, including the US Embassy, have sent their wishes to the people of Myanmar for the Burmese New Year this month on 17 April, reports DVB.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that on behalf of the United States, the US Embassy in Yangon wishes Burmese people a happy and prosperous new year.

The embassy said that citizens of Burma have faced unimaginable hardship and have shown great courage and resilience against the dictatorship since the coup. The Canadian Embassy also relayed similar words of encouragement.

The head of mission for the Danish embassy, Anders Graugaard, also sent his best wishes for the Thingyan holidays on behalf of Denmark and wished that Burma will soon return to the path of democracy.

Many parts of Myanmar have been quiet with people staying at home in protest against the military junta that grabbed power just over a year ago. Junta-organized celebrations drew only a small attendance, with people trucked in.
