Film director Mike Tee arrested for social media posts

Film Director Mike Tee, who is suffering from colon cancer, was arrested under Section 505-A for a social media post his sister, Lin Zar Ni Zaw, told Mizzima.

On the afternoon of 11 March, Military Council troops raided the 57-year-old director’s house in Bauk Htaw, Yangon Division and took him to Tamwe Township Police Station where he is currently being held.

Lin Zar Ni Zaw said: “He was arrested because of a post he put up on social media. He had not posted anything since the beginning of the political crisis. He did not use Facebook. When the military council came to arrest him, they told us about a paragraph that he had posted on social media. We don’t remember exactly what the paragraph said because we were very nervous at the time. We will have to hire a lawyer to get [to the bottom of] the facts. We are still thinking about hiring a lawyer.”

There had been a warrant out for Mike Tee’s arrest under Section 505-A since April 2021, but he has only just been arrested.

"We don’t always get permission to meet with him. But the family requested at Tamwe police station for permission to meet with him. His medical condition is not good and he needs to take drugs regularly. He does not consistently need the same amount of medication, the amount of drugs he has to take always needs to be adjusted,” said Lin Zar Ni Zaw.

Mike Tee, his 78-year-old mother and his sister, Chit Chit Zaw, have all been diagnosed with colon cancer.

Director Mike Tee is well known for his films: “Mike Chet Ka Tot Kam Kone Bal”, "Ma Chit Phu Tae A Chit Yuu" and “Yite Sar”.

In 2018 he was arrested under Section 16 (c) of the Criminal Code for possession of drugs but he did not serve a prison sentence.
