CRPH-NUG Support Group and India and New Delhi-based organisations discuss Myanmar issues

Indian-based organizations met to discuss issues related to Myanmar at a Chin Christian Church in New Delhi, India at midday on 16 February.

Leaders of ethnic organisations, church officials, activists, and the Committee Representing the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) and National Unity Government (NUG) Support Group – India attended the meeting.

They called on the Indian government to support the building of a new federal democratic union in Myanmar and to recognize the NUG as the legitimate government of Myanmar. They also discussed upcoming activities.

The CRPH/NUG Support Group – India was introduced to various New Delhi-based organizations at the event. The participants discussed future activities concerning Myanmar and their plans to hold a demonstration calling for democracy in Myanmar at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on 22 February.

The CRPH/NUG Support Group-India was formed on 2 February by Myanmar activists, many of whom had participated in Myanmar’s Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) before fleeing to India. It campaigns for the establishment of a new federal democratic union of Myanmar.

"We will make an effort to get the Indian Government to recognize the NUG government as a legitimate government and work together with them," said Htan Manar, the chairman of the CRPH/NUG Support Group – India.

Ali Johar of the Rohingya Association told Mizzima, “As a Rohingya who has experienced the atrocities of the Myanmar military, I know how the Myanmar people have suffered as a result of the coup. So, I came to the meeting today [16 February]. We will fight for Myanmar together with our Chin brothers and other organisations in the movement. The Indian government must support Myanmar’s democratization.”

He added: "We will urge The Indian government to recognize the NUG government. Only the 2020 elected government should be recognized, not the military regime that carried out the coup. We will work together to restore democracy in Myanmar and win the revolution. There are many different ethnic groups in Myanmar. The unity of various ethnic groups in different organizations is a strength. We must work together to build our nation.”

Officials from various New Delhi-based organizations such as Bamar organizations, a Rohingya association, the Chin Refugee Committee, and the CRPH/NUG Supporting Group-India attended the event. They called on the Indian government to recognize the NUG government as the official government of Myanmar, to support the building of a new federal democratic union, and not to collaborate with the military regime that has committed serious human rights abuses.
