Council of Christian Churches apologizes after calling for peace talks with junta military council

The Myanmar Council of Christian Churches issued a statement on 14 February apologizing for calling for organisations to attend the pre-peace meeting and Union Day celebrations that were held by the Military Council on 12 February.

The statement apologizes for inconveniencing member churches and affiliated organizations, Many Christian brothers and sisters were disturbed and saddened by the petition for lasting peace in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar issued on 11 February.

Criticism from Christian societies has risen sharply since the statement was made calling for participation in the pre-peace meeting and Union Day celebrations organized by the junta military council.

The Magway Region Myanmar Student Christian Movement strongly condemned the statement, demanded an apology and requested that those responsible resign.

It said that if it failed to do so, the Myanmar Student Christian Movement would withdraw from the association and no longer send representatives to MCC training sessions.

The Christian University of Myanmar also condemned the Myanmar Council of Christian Churches position. It announced that joint ventures with the organization had been suspended indefinitely as of 13 February.
