Committee for Shan State Unity calls for revival of a federal Shan State

The Committee for Shan State Unity (CSSU) announced on 7 February that the revival of a federal Shan State is an important requirement for state-building.

This was declared in a in a statement on peaceful coexistence issued by the CSSU on 7 February.

It also states that the boundaries of the future Shan State must not be smaller than the boundaries of the federal Shan State at the time of signing the Panglong Agreement, which was reached in Panglong, Southern Shan State, between then- Burmese government under Aung San and the Shan, Kachin, and Chin peoples in 1947.

The CSSU said that the peaceful coexistence policy is intended to resolve the long-term conflict in Shan State. It also includes state-building policies for peaceful coexistence.

"Our peaceful coexistence policy is based on equality, the right to self-determination and the right to dissent, so those who believe in it will collaborate, we hope," said CSSU spokesman Sai Leik in the statement.

A youth activist from Insein (Inthar) said that the CSSU statement was positively accepted, but a broad discussion is needed to include all ethnic groups in Shan State.

CSSU comprises Shan armed groups such as the Restoration Council of Shan State, the Shan State Progress Party, the Shan Nationalities Democratic Party and other Shan civil society organizations.
