Four young men from Bogale Township, Pyapon District in the Ayeyarwaddy Region have been sentenced to death for the murder of a junta informant.
According to the inmates' relatives, the four were apprehended by the Military Council on allegations of murder. Following legal proceedings that lasted over a year, the four were convicted and received the death sentence.
On 12 September, the judge of Pyapon District, Daw Thu Zar Aye, pronounced the sentencing of the four, namely Ko Pyae Sone Phyoe, Ko Zaw Win Tun, Ko Min Thu Aung, and Ko Naing Wai Lin, all aged 20 years old.
According to a family member of the inmates, the four young men were accused of being responsible for the fatal shooting of Thuzar Kyi, also known as Ma Thuzar, a female military informant who resided in Ward (6) of Bogale Township on 14 April, 2022.
As a result, they have been sentenced to death. Prior to the imposition of the capital punishment, it is reported that all four individuals had already received lengthy prison sentences under the Counter-Terrorism Law.
The Bogale Township People's Defense Force had previously issued a statement alleging that they were responsible for shooting and eliminating Ma Thuzar using a firearm.
Additionally, a member of the revolutionary force in Pyapon District has also stated that the act of sentencing these four young men, who are not affiliated with the People's Defense Force, to death is factually incorrect.
“These four individuals are not affiliated with the People's Defense Force. Therefore, this sentence is undoubtedly unjust,” a member of the revolutionary force in Pyapon District said, suggesting they did not commit this crime.
According to local sources, it is alleged that the police under the Military Council intended to transfer the four individuals to Pathein Prison in the Ayeyarwaddy region. However, it has not been confirmed yet whether the transfer has actually taken place or not.
The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) has published a report stating that a total of 146 individuals have been sentenced to death as a result of their involvement in pro-democracy movements following the 2021 military coup.
