88-Generation Student Leader Mya Aye sentenced to two years in prison

The junta sentenced 88-Generation student leader Mya Aye to two years in prison on 10 March.

Mya Aye was arrested on the day of the military coup, 1 February 2021, and was sentenced to two years in prison under Section 505 (c) of the Penal Code on 10 March, his 56th birthday.

"As Family members, we were prepared for whatever news, but today [10 March] we are angry and feel sorry. If time served in remand is taken into account there is only one year of the prison sentence left, but a year in prison is not short.” wrote Wai Hnin Pwint Thon, Mya Aye's eldest daughter, on her social media page.

Mya Aye was charged under Section 505 (c) of the Penal Code for sending an e-mail to a Chinese citizen eight years ago.

Mya Aye said in his final hearing on 1 March that he had been arrested without any charges and that the court was not fair as it was a military tribunal.

Mya Aye is in poor health and has been treated in a hospital outside prison, but the court did not allow him to receive any further treatment.
