80 Myanmar citizens arrested in Manipur State, India

Eighty Myanmar citizens were arrested in India, in Lankar town, Manipur State on 28 June, according to the Zogam Daily, a local online news agency.

According to reports received by Mizzima, police from the Churachandpur District of Manipur carried out house-to-house searches in Manipur's Lankar Town between the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. on 28 June.

They detained and arrested 80 people, all Myanmar citizens, under suspicion of being illegal immigrants. Of these, 25 were men, 35 were women and 20 were children. Currently, it is not known where they are being held.

A Myanmar citizen who is trying to evade the police in Manipur said: 'I am still on the run and in hiding. We don't know the condition of the detained people. They can't be contacted, I think their phones have been confiscated.'

He also said that none of the detained had legal residency permits.

Reportedly, they will be prosecuted under the Foreigner's Act, FIR ref No. 107 (06) 2022 CCP-PS u/s 14. Their trial is due to start in 15 days.

The Chief Medical Officer of Churachandpur has sent a medical team to carry out medical check-ups on the detainees and to provide them with water and other essential supplies.
