A 9 October, Myanmar junta airstrike on an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in northern Kachin State killed 29 people, including 11 children under 16 years of age, according to the Kachin Independence Army (KIA).

The airstrike hit the IDP camp in Munglai Hkyet Village, which is approximately two miles away from Laiza Town where the KIA headquarters are located, at 11:00 p.m. on 9 October.

As well as killing 29 people the airstrike also injured 57. Many of those are being treated at Laiza Public Hospital.

Many funerals for the dead victims were held on 10 October.

Colonel Naw Bu, a spokesperson for the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) said that the junta’s airstrike on a village where it knew IDPs were sheltering was an act of genocide.

The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) issued a statement on 10 October expressing the organisation’s deep shock and sorrow over the killings of innocent civilians in the IDP camp by a junta airstrike.
