Hundreds of monks and their supporters marched in Yangon on Thursday to protest against the issuing of an arrest warrant for U Wirathu.
The sedition charge against the high-profile monk came after insulting comments he made at a nationalist rally on May 5 about State Counsellor, Aung San Suu Kyi.
The monk, based at a monastery in Mandalay, could be jailed for three years if found guilty.
Thursday's rally saw his supporters gather and pray at Shwedagon Pagoda.
