Understanding the responsibility to protect in international law: Gareth Evans

Mizzima sat down with international expert on the Right to Protect principle, Gareth Evans during the week.

We have seen so many members of our community out on the streets calling for R2P so Mizzima set out to understand it better.

We started by talking to a leading international expert.

Gareth Evans is the former Foreign Minister of Australia and was an initiator of the 1991 Paris Peace Accords for Cambodia.

Mr Evans is President Emeritus of the International Crisis Group, the Brussels-based independent global conflict prevention and resolution organisation which he led from 2000 to 2009.

He has co-chaired two major International Commissions, on Intervention and State Sovereignty (2000-01), and Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (2008-10), and has been a member of a number of others.

He currently Co-Chairs the International Advisory Board of the New-York based Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect.
