UK minister meets NUG representative, reiterates support for Myanmar people

The United Kingdom affirms its support for the Myanmar people in the wake of the coup, said Anne-Marie Trevelyan, UK Minister for the Indo-Pacific, following her meeting on 20 March with a Myanmar National Unity Government (NUG) official and ethnic leaders.

As she writes, “Myanmar military has plunged the country into crisis, with millions in urgent humanitarian need. Today I met NUG @WinMyatAye and ethnic leaders to affirm our support for the most vulnerable. We stand with the Myanmar people as they work for a peaceful and inclusive democracy.”

The UK minister met with Dr. Win Myat Aye, 68, Union Minister for the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management of the NUG and ethnic leaders in London.

The UK government has been supportive of Myanmar’s opposition movement.

Ms. Trevelyan in a speech on 2 February 2023 called on the Myanmar military to “engage in inclusive and meaningful dialogue with the full range of opposition voices, including the National Unity Government (NUG), and respect the democratic aspirations of the people of Myanmar.”

As she noted, in 2022, UK Ministers spoke regularly with their counterparts in the NUG.

The UK Minister for the Indo-Pacific has called on the Myanmar military to immediately end its campaign of violence and release the thousands of people it has detained arbitrarily, including Aung San Suu Kyi.

She said the military must engage in inclusive and meaningful dialogue with the full range of opposition voices in order to respect the federal, democratic aspirations of the people of Myanmar.
