The National Unity Government (NUG)

  • From 31 January to 2 February 2023, the 5th Union Parliament or Pyitaungsu Hluttaw will be conducted for three days. Reportedly, subjects discussed will be MPs and members of the NUG.
  • According to the NUG Union Minister of Information, Communication and Technology, there was a meeting between the NUG, some ethnic organisations and a delegation of the US Deputy Foreign Minister in Washington. Reportedly, they agreed to the provision of assistance for three points.
  • According to the NUG Ministry of Human Rights, the foundation of the Spring Revolution has been based on strong determination, sacrifices, courage and commitment of the public over a period of two years.
  • Based on the statistics from NUG Ministries and Civil Society Organisations, the NUG Ministry of Human Rights stated that a total of 2,894 people had lost their lives due to the violent activities of the junta armed forces over the period of two years, including 279 children under the age of 18, 447 women and 70 members of the healthcare staff.
  • The NUG Ministry of Defence expressed its honour for the people and their comrades who have been dedicated to the revolution. It also claimed that the junta army has been disorganised.
  • A report by the Committee Representing the Pyitaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) said it had been making strategic efforts to strengthen its networks with international parliaments. On the other hand, they have been joining hands with the NUG and the National Unity Consultative Council- NUCC to put an end to the ongoing conflicts in the country.

Revolutionary Activities

  • Activists condemned the crimes against humanity committed in Myanmar and called on the international community to take action against the military junta.
  • In a statement on the second anniversary of the military coup in Myanmar, the US Foreign Minister announced that there would be sanctions against six individuals and three organisations that have business relations with the junta army as well as the junta Union Election Commission.
  • The European Union (EU) called for more international measures including the ban of weapons to stop the sale and transfer of military equipment to Myanmar’s Army.
  • On the second anniversary of the military coup, people from all over the country took part in the Silent Strike against the military dictatorship on Wednesday. In Thailand, thousands of Myanmar people conducted anti-junta protests in front of the Myanmar Embassy and the United Nations Office in Bangkok.
  • In Malaysia, Myanmar people and the NLD (OC) conducted a Silent Strike against Myanmar’s military dictatorship on Wednesday.
  • In Kani Township in Sagaing Region, a rally of the Spring Revolution Force led a protest against the military dictatorship on Wednesday.
  • On Wednesday, the Sagaing Township General Strike marched against the military dictatorship, with a banner that said ‘2023 is the end of the military dog’.
  • In Sagaing, Yinmabin and Salingyi, all the local people took part in a Silent Strike against the military dictatorship on Wednesday.
  • In Pekone in Shan South and the Monywa-Amyint Community in Sagaing Region, local residents conducted a Silent Strike against the military dictatorship on Wednesday.
  • In Magwe, Chauk, Minbu and Pwint Phyu in Magwe Region, there were silent strikes against the military dictatorship on Wednesday.
  • On Wednesday, anti-junta monks joined the Silent Strike.
  • In Bamaw and Thegone, the public participated in the Silent Strike against the military dictatorship on Wednesday.
  • On the second anniversary of the military coup, team members from Anyar Pyit Tie Taung joined the Silent Strike against the military dictatorship.
  • Except for a handful of pro-military individuals, there were few people near the City Hall in downtown Yangon.

Ethnic Armed Organisations

  • Somewhere in Demoso Township in Karenni State, a combination of revolutionary forces expressed their objection to the military dictatorship on the second anniversary of the coup.
  • In Karenni State, KNDF members led a protest against the military dictatorship on Wednesday.
  • According to the Matupi Times, the CNA and the CDF arrested six junta soldiers together with their weapons in Thantlang in Chin State.
  • Hakha CDF called on all of the public to take part in the Spring Revolution or the final battle for the liberation of the nation and the people. They also stated that there would be action against those who help and support the junta’s election.
  • According to a representative of CDF/CNA, six junta soldiers were arrested together with weapons in the CB Bank in Thantlang on Wednesday.

The Military Council

  • In Yangon, the team led by Michael Kyaw Myint marched from Bahan to the City Hall to show their support for the military coup. Reportedly, they were protected by junta soldiers and the police.
  • On Tuesday, the junta Union Election Commission (UEC) released statements related to political parties.
  • Dr. Hla Myat Thwe, the Social Minister of Ayeyarwady Region for the NLD government, was sentenced to two years in prison by the junta court.
  • The junta Minister of Education said that there had been educational cooperation between universities in Thailand and those in Myanmar. Reportedly, they signed up to 60 MOUs until December 2022.
  • The military junta announced that there had been discussions with Russian companies to invest in factories manufacturing batteries for electric vehicles.

Summary on 2 February

  • Through the Nationwide Silent Strike, the general public expressed its strong disapproval of the military dictatorship.
  • In areas under the influence of revolutionary forces, there were protests against the military dictatorship and the junta’s faked election. Judging from this, it is clear that the military junta cannot yet rule the country.
